ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

Today, Kodak announced that they will discontinue Tri-X 320 in 120/220 format. They also said that they have enough to last through March of 2010, but after that, no more. Kodak TXP320 B&W is the last 220 film as Tri-X 400 (TX) is not manufactured in 220 format. I am not a user of this particular film, but being a huge fan of B&W medium format films, I am bummed to see it go. Just don't take my Kodak Professional Plus-X 125 120mm film away!

SPA VELIA - SAN DIEGO CA

BRETT & KIM'S WEDDING

I had the honor of photographing Brett and Kim's destination wedding in La Jolla, California. The Canadian couple had a very beautiful ceremony right next to the ocean cliffs. I knew they were a super cool couple right off the bat when they asked if I could shoot black and white film at their wedding. I had a blast doing some creative B&W film stuff during their formals. Brett and Kim have traveled all over the world and they have the sweetest family and friends you'll ever meet. Kim's Uncle Michael even sent me a copy of their wedding video as a gift, which I will treasure. Cheers to you Brett & Kim!!!!

CALIFORNIA VISUAL ARTISTS EXHIBIT 2010

My work has been chosen to be a part of the "California Visual Artists 2010" group exhibit in celebration of artists and their work at the 2nd City Council Art Gallery in Long Beach, CA. The show will feature mixed media from California artists. The opening reception will feature a live performance from the rock/pop band CENTREVOL.

Ed Schad, a curator and writer living in Los Angeles, was the juror of this exhibit. He has written independently for Art Review in London, Art Slant in Los Angeles, Renegade Bus in Dallas and more.

SAN SIMEON TRAIL - II

Here are some more images from the San Simeon Trail that I took 3 years ago. It was great spending Christmas at the San Simeon campground. The beautiful ocean is just a stone throw away from your tent and Hearst Castle is right up the road. Christmas at the Castle is so cool!

SAN SIMEON TRAIL - I

It was exactly 3 years ago this week when I camped out in San Simeon, California. I just came across these images recently and thought I would share them with you. If you love to hike and camp ... I would highly recommend San Simeon. I remember having so much fun taking these photos. The trail is a blast! I remember wanting to try something different ... so I chose color and digital. I also played with getting more up close to the subject matter. Ah, good times!

THE VANISHING BRIDGES OF HAWAII

Yesterday, I read in the Star-Bulletin that the 90-year-old North Kahana Stream Bridge on Kamehameha Highway is due to be replaced with a new modern structure designed to carry heavier loads and to help reduce flooding in the area. The $13.3 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.

I am so grateful that I captured and preserved this old bridge in my body of work this past June. The title of this work is "Kahana River, Oahu". I find it to be heartbreaking that so many of Hawaii's old bridges are being torn down and replaced with modern structures that look like eye sores. I understand there is a safety issue involved and I know that when these bridges were first originally built there were a lot less cars on the road then. What I do not understand is ... why can't the old bridges be retrofitted? Would it be too costly? Would it cost more than $13.3 million dollars to do so? The old Hawaiian bridges have so much charm and history about them. I would like to know why the new bridges that are replacing them ... why do they not have the same design or aesthetic style? A prime example would be the new galvanized steel truss bridge that replaced the old wooden Wainiha Bridge on the north shore of Kauai. Another eye sore of a design that does not reflect the ambient landscape ... or Hawaii for that matter.

I have had the pleasure of walking across many of these old bridges on Hawaii. There is this special feeling that you get when you experience them first hand. I welcome your comments on this post.

These color works were created on my recent trip to Punta Banda, Baja Mexico. I originally set out to photograph the surrounding areas in B&W infrared film (yes, I still have a few rolls of the discontinued HIE film by Kodak) but because of the thick fog layer, I was unable to use my film as it requires more sunlight. I took these images as the sun disappeared behind the horizon using very long exposures. While creating these images during night fall ... I remember the thick mist and cool ocean breeze. I found it to be a joy to experiment and think outside the box while creating new works. I hope you enjoy them. I have more color works from this series to follow ... so please check back very soon.
